[edit]

THIRTEEN police boxes in central Edinburgh have been listed for their architectural merit. Designed by the City Architects' Department, under Ebenezer J. MacRae, in the late 1930s, their style was intended to harmonise with the city's Classical buildings. They cannot now be demolished or altered without listed building consent, ensuring that Edinburgh will not be entirely overrun by British Telecom's utilitarian new kiosks.
