WisCon, Madison's annual science fiction convention, will celebrate its 10th anniversary today through Sunday at the Concourse Hotel.

Activities include a masquerade, art show and auction and a "huckster room" in which science fiction and fantasy games and books will be available for sale. Panel discussions taking place throughout the convention will focus on everything from women's roles in science fiction to Dr. Who.

Also, as part of the convention, a premiere showing of "Uforia" will be held at University Square Theater at 11 a.m. Sunday. The offbeat romantic comedy officially opens in Madison on Feb. 28.

Guests of honor for WisCon will be Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, a writer recognized for her historical fantasies about a vampire and many science fiction and mystery novels; and Suzette Haden Elgin, author of the "Ozark Fantasy Trilogy" and a series of science fiction novels about Coyote Jones.

Also attending will be writers Suzy McKee Charnas, Juanita Coulson, Lee Killough, Jessica Amanda Salmonson, editor David Hartwell and Roger Mueller, an actor who will be playing in the first American production of "Dr. Who and the Inheritors of Time." The play opens in Chicago in May. With him will be director John Ostran.

The convention will open at noon today (registration is at 1 p.m.) and 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The art show-auction is 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday. Memberships, which may be purchased at the door for $18, are required to enter. There are no additional charges for such events as the movie and art show.

WisCon 10 is being sponsored by the Society for the Furtherance and Study of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Information is available through 251-6226 (days) and 233-0326 (evenings).
