THE work of 18 teenage film makers will go on public show for the first time in Sunderland this week.

The two 20-minute colour films, made by 14 to 16-year-olds at Monkwearmouth School. Sunderland, during their half-term holiday last March, will be screened at Sunderland Arts Center tomorrow night after a private showing at the school.

The youngsters directed and shot the film themselves, as well as being responsible for casting, costumes, planning the scenario and appearing as actors.

Thy wrote the script for one film. "Ha'Way Dr. Who," a spoof fantasy on the television series, and adapted the script of the second, "Gang War.' It is the story of two rival gangs. Second Sight Film Projects, a mobile film unit, worked with the boys.

Mr. Ian Kershaw, the school's informal education tutor, said yesterday: 'None of them had done anything like it before. I think they found it remarkably easy.

"They worked fantastically hard for a week, preparing all their own material, rehearsing it and filming it.

"The gained a lot of insight into the handling of film equipment and the process of putting a film together and learning to work with each other.

"I think it will have raised their expectations. They will look at films from now on from the point of view of how they were put together and what is involved."
