THE search is on for Dr Who fans who have not exterminated treasured memorabilia on the cult TV classic.

A London-based production company is compiling a special documentary on the annual Dr Who conferences once run in Blackpool.

Daleks and Cybermen were not uncommon sights in the resort during the sci-fi exhibitions centred on the popular series, which were held for over a decade until the mid-1980s.

Dr Who actor Jon Pertwee officially opened the first conference in April 1973.

Reel Time Pictures, which specialises in producing new Dr Who dramas, is hoping to uncover more rare footage to fill the 50-minute video.

Researcher Gary Vernon said they were particularly keen on footage of early conferences.

About 18 months ago, we put an advert in a monthly Dr Who publication asking if anyone had video footage from the Blackpool exhibition, he said.

We have not yet got enough to fill a 50-minute programme. We are also looking for footage from when Tom Baker switched on the Illuminations in 1975.

We know it's a long shot - the exhibition closed in the mid-80s just as camrecorders were really taking off. We have footage from this time but are particularly keen to see if anyone has any cinefilm from the 1970s.

The first ever Doctor Who was screened in November 1963 and the last - a film starring Paul McGann - was shown in 1996.

It is rumoured the BBC is now negotiating a future series with Stephen Fry as a possible lead.

Mr Vernon feels this would introduce Dr Who to a whole new generation.

Obviously, with it not being on television any more there is a whole generation of children who don't know about it.

But there is a still a big fan base out there and I'm sure the programme will come back one day and attract even more.
