HIS arrival was more hotly anticipated than Doctor Who during a Dalek invasion.

And last night Matt Smith's debut as the 11th Time Lord got the thumbs-up with fans flooding web forums to heap praise on the new star.

More than 10 million people were said to have tuned in as Matt, 27, took over the role from David Tennant. In the hour-long special, The Eleventh Hour, they saw him saving the world from the aliens.

In a poll on website Digitalspy 65 per cent of fans rated the show "very good". One fan said: "Big shoes left behind by David Tennant. Matt Smith filled them."

Another added: "Matt has slotted straight in brilliantly." Others paid tribute to the Doctor's new assistant Amy Pond - actress Karen Gillan, 22 - and the on-screen action between the pair.

One said: "Amy looks like she'll be a really good companion, and they have a nice chemistry already."

In 2005, 8.3 million people tuned in when David Tennant took over from previous star Christopher Ecclestone.
