WHO'S WHO?: Peter Capaldi with David Bradley as the 12th and first Doctors DOCTOR Who fans will have to wait until Christmas Day to discover what happens to the Time Lord - after his current incarnation met his end in a dramatic cliff-hanger last night. Glasgow-born star Peter Capaldi bowed out of the role by being blasted in the back by a Cyberman.

Fans hoping to see the Doctor regenerate - and learn who will take on the role for the next series - were left disappointed. Last night's season finale also saw Harry Potter and Game of Thrones star David Bradley take on the role of the First Doctor, originally played by the late William Hartnell when the programme began in 1963. The episode is being hailed as a triumph for chief writer and executive producer Steven Moffatt, who has been in charge of Doctor Who for the past seven years.

Last night, the BBC released images from this year's Christmas Special, which will feature Capaldi and Bradley, suggesting the struggle of regeneration still has a way to go. In what will have been an emotional conclusion for many, cameras close in on the Time Lord's lifeless body.

But Capaldi miraculously comes to life, appearing to dive out of the Tardis door into the unknown, muttering: 'I am not a doctor. I am THE Doctor.' As he begins to regenerate, a figure emerges from the shadows - and soon puts the twelfth Time Lord firmly in his place.

'The Doctor? I don't think so,' Bradley tells him.

'You may be a doctor. But I am THE Doctor.'
