DYNASTY star Kate O'Mara was celebrating last night as the soap series was saved from the scrapheap.

Producers confirmed it will be back next season after overcoming one of America's worst rating plunges.

At one time the series, also starring John Forsythe, Linda Evans and Joan Collins, lost 20 per cent of its audience.

Scrambled

But it has now scrambled back to 17th place in the U.S. ratings, ahead of Magnum, starring Tom Selleck.

And Kate, in Britain filming Dr Who episodes, said: "If the series had gone, I would have been very sad.

"It got me known in the States and also helped my bank balance considerably. I love living and working in Los Angeles and would have gone back anyway."

Kate plays Caress Morel, younger sister of Joan Collins' superbitch character Alexis, in Dynasty.

And she said: "Caress makes a dramatic exit in this Friday's episode; now fortunately she will be able to return."

Insiders believe Dynasty has been hit by competition from its spin-off, the Colbys, and by way-out plots.

Yet such plots do no harm to Dr Who, in which Kate plays an evil time lady, the Rani, who tangles with new doctor Sylvester McCoy and his assistant Mel —Bonny Langford—on the planet Lakertya.
