Matthew Arnold talks to Sylvester McCoy
ALTHOUGH Sylvester McCoy is probably best known for his role as Dr Who, the versatility of his acting ability is prominent when you glance at his extensive list of achievements.
This December sees Sylvester playing a robber in the production of 'Babes In The Wood' at The Arts Theatre, Cambridge.
In contrast, his other stage work includes Feste in Twelfth Night, Renfied in Dracula and Pompey in Antony and Cleopatra.
For a man who "fell into acting by accident at the age of 27", this seasoned actor has also delved into television presenting and film work.
As for Dr Who, Sylvester telephoned his agent after hearing the BBC required a new time traveller. The producer had already suggested Sylvester for the part and after seeing his performance in The Pied Piper at The National Theatre, he was invited for a screen test which lead to his becoming the seventh Dr Who.
"Television is another form of acting and it makes being an actor infinitely interesting," he said. Although he enjoys his work on the small screen, he says that theatre nudges ahead in his level of enjoyment.
He enjoys panto as it enables him to play in front of a live audience and also to a broad cross-section of the population.
Although most of his audiences have been quite receptive, he recalls working in a production during an undertakers' strike. The audience was so bad it was suggested the backlog of bodies was being stored in the theatre!
The BBC has yet to confirm a new series of Dr Who, but Sylvester has a busy future planned. He may be starring in a musical about Buster Keaton and in a play as Samuel Pepys.
Yet more credits to be added to his list of achievements, and all this from a man who has trained to be a priest, appeared as a regular in the 1970s cult children's TV show TISWAS, hammered a nail up his nose in the first 'Secret Policeman's Ball' and played the spoons for the London Concert Orchestra.
