THE BBC's Children In Need appeal has been pledged a record £5,264,655 from charity-conscious viewers and listeners throughout Britain.

A host of stars, including Superman actor Christopher Reeve and former world featherweight champion Barry McGuigan, lent their support during last night's six-hour TV marathon, hosted by Terry Wogan.

The huge appeal, which has raised more than £ll million in the six years it has been running, began on Monday with the auctioning of Dr Who's Tardis on Radio 2's Derek Jameson Show for £3,100.

Last year £4,476,679 was raised for the appeal. which provides play equipment and holidays for underprivileged children.

Likely to double

"It's phenomenal," said Terry. "Just think, if we manage to double tonight's total, as we have done in previous years, we'll have raised more. money than the previous five years put together.

"It just goes to show what can be achieved when the whole BBC, local radio and regional television, as well as network television, pulls together.

"It's an astounding total. Thank you for putting your hands in your pockets so deeply," he said. The pledges. from local and national radio, as well as TV audiences across the country, will aid thousands of children.
