[edit]

The Daleks are coming back. After months of wrangling and threats of extermination, the silver slowcoaches are returning to strike fear in a new generation.

The BBC has promised to give them a makeover before they join the doctor's latest adventures after a 15-year 'retirement' but they'll still talk in metallic voices and run, slowly, on wheels. It had looked as though they were finished forever after negotiations between the BBC and the estate of Terry Nation, who created them, broke down.

But yesterday the two sides finally reached a deal on the Daleks began dusting off.

Viewers will see them do battle with the latest incarnation of the doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston, when the series returns for 13-week run next year.

Insiders say they will be updated for a new generation but it is not yet known if they will now be able to climb stairs.

BBC controller of continuing drama Mal Young said: "As well as coming face to face with a number of exciting monsters, it's good news that the doctor will also do battle with his arch enemies.

"The series already promised a surprise and entertain a new generation."

The new Dr. Who also features former pop star and wife of Chris Evans, Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, the doctor's companion.
