THE marvellous BBC series "DOCTOR WHO" (BBC 1, 6.25) celebrates its 500th episode this week with the start of a new six-part adventure, "The Armageddon Factor."

The Doctor, Romana and K9 have found all but one of the segments to the key to time.

Searching for the final one they travel to the twin planets of Atrios and Zeos, who are in the midst of an interplanetary nuclear war. Each intent on destroying the other.

Before Tom Baker, the 'Doctor' had been played on the small screen by other fine actors.

The late William Hartnell played "Doctor Who" when the show was launched in November 1963. He was followed by the pipe playing Patrick Troughton (left), who in turn was suceeded by elegantly dressed Jon Pertwee (centre).

When two films were made based on the TV adventures, Peter Cushing played the part of Doctor Who.
