SIR — I sincerely hope that the report carried by you (November 4) regarding the BBC's attempts to sell off Doctor Who to the Americans is incorrect.

In this, the 30th anniversary year of the series. this has to be the worst possible news for fans of the good Doctor. Is this the best plan of action that the BBC could come up with to revive the series? If so. it would be better if they let it stay dead and buried.

What can we expect if this does indeed go ahead? If Seaquest DSV is anything to go by — vacuous moralising. phony emotions and paper thin plots. Or worse, Starsky and Hutch in space — I have already heard the rumour that David Hasselhoff is up for the lead — Captain Scarlet is a less wooden actor!

This is just another example of the English selling off bits of Britain to the Americans. sacrificing my country to the almighty dollar. What will he the next move by Dalek-General Birt? Dixon of Dock Green by Steven Bochco?

Doctor Who is a British series and should be produced by a British company — he that the BBC or an independent (Thames?) — and should have a British cast (Jonathan Pryce or Anthony Hopkins for Doctor!).

If the Americans want to put up money for the series. fine, but it must remain looking and being a British show, old Police Box (obviously out for the US) and all.
