2 DOCTOR WHO

1963 RON GRAINER, DELIA DERBYSHIRE

The only instance of an iconic TV theme being "realised" — that is, put through the electronic rinse cycle of the groundbreaking BBC Radiophonic Workshop under Delia Derbyshire — Australian composer Ron Grainer's enduring, oscillating whoosh of temporal travel has, happily, stood the test of time. Proven by experts to send viewers of all ages instantaneously behind the sofa, its "woo-ooo-oooh" refrain and fractal visuals never date. Even current composer Segun Akinola obeys the original key, E minor, paying homage to Who heritage. Likewise, Murray Gold, stalwart of the 2005 revival, who sampled bits of the original.
