[edit]

THE great guessing game of who will be Who is over. A new, younger Doctor Who is to take over in the BBC television series later this year, it was announced today.

The new man is Tom Baker, who played the mad monk Rasputin in Sam Spiegel's film Nicholas and Alexandra.

Success

He is much the same size as Jon Pertwee, the present Doctor Who, but younger. Tom Baker is 6ft. 3in. and in his 30s. Jon Pertwee is 6ft. 2½ in. and in his 30s.

The series producer, Barry Letts, decided that the programme needed a slight change of style and opted for a younger man. He considered dozens of actors before making his choice.

The series has been one of the most consistently successful in the history of the BBC and the new man had to be chosen with care.

The Liverpool-born former member of the National Theatre Company will be the fourth man to take over the cloak and Tardis time machine of Doctor Who.

Number One was William Hartnell, followed by Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and now Tom Baker.

Jon Pertwee, who is leaving to return to the stage, will disappear from the series in the summer.

Caption: Who's Who? None other than Tom Baker, following in the Pertwee footsteps today.
