[edit]

MYSTIFIED Daphne Ashbrook's first reaction when offered a top role was to ask her agent: "Dr WHO?"

For American actress Daphne had never heard of the famous time traveller before being asked to play his female companion Dr Grace Holloway in a new TV movie.

She had never shivered as the Daleks croaked "Exterminate!" or watched the Tardis land on a strange planet.

But glamorous Daphne, who has appeared in Falcon Crest, says: "I soon learned what a great reputation Dr Who has. I have girlfriends in Britain and they freaked out when I told them."

Paul McGann, Dr Who in the new Hollywood version, had no such problems. As a child he hid behind the settee when the Daleks appeared in the old series. He will be the eighth actor to play the TV Doctor since the show began in 1963.

The first was William Hartnell, followed over the years by Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison. Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy.

The 90-minute spectacular is on BBC1 on Bank Holiday Monday. May 27.
