[edit]

William Hartnell, 67, British character actor best known in his own country as the original Dr. Who in a British television children's series, died April 24 in London.

The thin-lipped actor, who rose briefly to star status in the 1940s after playing small-time crooks and tough sergeants, was seen in "Follow The Lady," "While Parents Sleep," "Murder at Madame Tussaud's" and "Farewell Again." He also played roles in "They Drive By Night," "Flying Fortress," "Suspected Person," "The Peterville Diamond," "Private's Progress," "Carry On Sergeant," "This Sporting Life," "Heaven's Above," and many others.

His stage debut was in 1932 in "The Man I Killed," but most of his career was in films and television. He is survived by his wife, Heather McIntyre, former actress and playwright, and a daughter.
