Many Northwestern students want to break out. They feel a need to explore life beyond Evanston, and sometimes look to the outer limits of the universe.
Contrary to popular belief, one doesn't need to drop acid to accomplish this. A visit to the New Fantasy Shop, 5651 W. Belmont in Chicago can do the job just as effectively.
The New Fantasy Shop specializes in all sorts of science fiction literature, artwork, games, hobby sets, and tee shirts. It also houses an impressive stock of collector items ranging anywhere from "Rocky Horror" movie stills to rare comic books.
"The whole store is based on the idea of escapism," said Everett R. Fong, store manager. "We get all kinds of people coming in to browse and they seem to enjoy themselves."
The magazine and book section includes the whole gamut of the current science fiction craze, from the kiddie-schlock "Doctor Who's Weekly" to the somewhat sophisticated "Heavy Metal," an adult fantasy magazine. There are over 200 book titles for the connoisseur to choose from.
The Fantasy Shop also houses countless rare and classic comic books. "The comic book collectors account for half of our business." Fong said.
Store owner, George Breo, says the shop attracts people "from ten years old to their mid-thirties," but explained that he's trying to "bring in the college-age crowd."
Still in the planning stages are a weekly movie series on Sunday afternoons and an open "Dungeons and Dragons" game, a complex contest that has become fairly popular on several college campuses around the country.
The New Fantasy Shop is open from 12 to 8 on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 11-6 every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, and from 12 to 5 on Sundays. It's quite a way down Belmont Avenue from the El stop so be prepared to take the CTA bus and get off at Central Avenue.
