A sudden change in management has left Clara feeling confused
Could HR solve...?
The problem
Clara Oswald has been travelling with the Eleventh Doctor for several months. But when he is trapped during a siege on the planet Trenzalore for hundreds of years, he ages significantly and is forced to regenerate. Clara sees him transform into the Twelfth Doctor, but is distressed at the prospect of working alongside this new leader, who looks and acts very differently to the old boss she knew and loved.
The solution
"People often don't warm to new managers who are introduced without prior warning:' says Helen Greenwood, founder of Helen Greenwood Human Resources (below). Instead of calling to comfort Clara from the past (after the transformation took place), the Doctor should have briefed her ahead of time on what the change would mean for his personality and approach to management, and how that could change their working relationship.
"HR should also have ensured that a senior manager stepped in to explain why the new Doctor is joining the team, his goals and priorities, before he arrived; says Greenwood. "With a much more aggressive and confrontational management style than most other Doctors, the Twelfth is leaving himself open to conflict with his team, and possibly even formal grievances."
Clara has to work on her attitude, too. "She needs to take time to understand the Doctor's personality and working style, and identify where she can fit into this new team," Greenwood says. She also recommends Clara reaches out to previous companions to find out how they dealt with regenerations.
