The Face of Evil. The Robots of Death — ah! you don't get titles like those any more! Nor yet characters with names like Chub. Borg. Dask, Toos. Pout or D84. In fact, Dr Who (BBC-1, Saturday. January 29, 6.20 pm). like that moth-eaten police box. has turned up out of the past, long. woolly scarf and all.

Tom Baker, the most recent in the great tradition of inter-planetary Flying Dutchmen, a dark-haired Harpo Marx with a fruit-cake voice (taught elocution by Demosthenes?), has been playing the part for two years now and has settled comfortably into that strange cardboard and silver-paper world of comic-sounding names and startling concepts.

In this series he has emerged on to a sort of 21st century North Sea oil rig, complete with a new female side-kick (Louise Jameson), where a group of inter-galactic asset-strippers are going over an asteroid. complete with robots in metallic anoraks and face-masks.

This new series has considerably more style than the last one (which featured a computer with schizophrenia), with a script, subtly reminiscent of I Claudius, Ellen, Queen and Tomorrow's World. by Chris Boucher and impressive designs by Kenneth Sharp. The special effects were a little polystyrene but, mercifully, the acting was not. There was an excellent performance by Russell Hunter as a celestial Steptoe in a Tiffany lampshade hat and Miles Fothergill was a delightfully horrid robot with a mind of its own.

My compliments, Mr Boucher, on your script. They need men like you on Mars.
