New friends, old foes - Peter Capaldi's Time Lord is heading back for a tenth series on BBC1

THE TIME LORD doesn't hang about - there's yet another young woman in his life. Enter Bill Potts, played by Pearl Mackie. A relative newcomer to TV, Brixton-born Mackie made her mark at the National Theatre in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Bill is described as funny, geeky, goofy and with a bit of a temper. Also look out for Matt Lucas, who's returning as Nardole, the comedic character he's played in two Christmas specials. He'll be popping up throughout the tenth series.

The storylines remain closely under wraps of course, but these 12 episodes and the 2017 Christmas special will mark Steven Moffat's last term as showrunner, before he hands over the Tardis keys to Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall. David Suchet is guest-starring as the mysterious "Landlord" in an episode written by Doctor Foster's Mike Bartlett. The writing team includes old hands Mark Gatiss and Frank Cottrell-Boyce, as well as Rona Munro, who's returning to Who 27 years after penning the final adventure of the original run in 1989.

Peter Capaldi, ever the fan of old-school Who, says that he would relish fending off the Daemons, Axons and Autons (diabolical foes from Jon Pertwee's time) and that he'd love the Tardis to land back on Vortis, planet of the ant-like Zarbi last visited in 1965. Will he have his wishes fulfilled? What is known is that the Doctor hasn't seen the last of Missy, the wicked Time Lady played by Michelle Gomez. Moffat confirms: "Oh, of course Missy will be back! How could she not be?"
