Space-age rotter who's just an old softie

HERE'S some consolation for children who are scared by The Master in DOCTOR WHO (Saturday, BBC1, 5.20 p.m.).

Actor Anthony Ainley. who portrays this evil Time Lord. is quite the opposite type of being ... gentle, charming, cricket-loving.

Ambition

Anthony has played The Master for four years and says : His ambition is to see the good doctor eternally entombed. so that chaos may reign over the cosmos. The Master has two hearts, and he's indestructible, but he experiences much frustration.

"He managed to shrink Dr Who—Tom Baker — in his tissue compression eliminator and hurled him from a great height only to see him survive as Peter Davison !"

Anthony, son of classical actor Henry Ainley. said : "This role gives me a chance to assume different disguises, different voices. I'm fond of The Master : lie pays my bills."

In today's episode The Master, now combating Colin Baker as Dr Who, has an ally in The Rani (Kate O'Mara).

This is The Master's last appearance of the current Dr Who season. But even the children who find him frightening would be sad if he didn't return for the nest round of stories.
