ONCE Louise Jameson used to be the lithe Leela, Dr Who's most glamorous helper In suede knickers and bra.
Then she became one of the tortured women of Tenko, all bones and baggy rags.
Now she has the role half the women in Britain would give their eye teeth for She plays the live-in-lover of Jim Bergerac (John Nettles) the Jersey copper in the BBC's new Bergerac series now being filmed in Jersey,
But, she told me on tota1 ion this week, she would much nether be living In a polythene tent on Greenhorn Common, cooking beans over a camp fire.
For lovely Louise, 34, the woman who finally wins Bergerac's heart, is a devoted feminist and she revealed this week that she is a regales visitor to the women's anti-nuclear protest camp.
Just because she believes in feminism does not mean that Louise does not like men.
She has two sons. Harry, tiled three, and Tom 15 months, She lives with the theatrical director Stephen Rayne and the family accompanies tier when the files to Jersey to film.
In the new — and fourth — series of Bergerac, which starts next month, she plays local estate agent Susan Young, well-heeled, well loved.
"She is Jim Bergerac's first real girlfriend in that they actually do live together," says Louise. "She is the perfect mate for him. She cooks she cleans and does his clothes. She does not get rutty with him, though, when he comes in late, or nag him for forgettinz things
"She is not a bit like me," adds Louise. "I would not have that kind of behaviour at all"
And her feminist feelings have affected her attitude to the roles she plays She says she did not enjoy her part In Dr Who as the tightly clad Leela
"I have always been very grateful to Dr Who because it did me a great deal of good.
"But in the end you have to admit there is a limit to the number of ways you can say 'What is that, Doctor?'
"The role I enjoyed most of all was the part of Blanche in Tenko.
"It was the only time in my life that people have told me I need to put on weight. I am normally very slim, but I was down to eight stone then and I am 5ft 7in tall. I was dangerously thin."
She is certainly not too thin now. As Bergerac's bedfellow she looks lovely and elegant.
