Bizarre Dr Who monsters and other BBC television costumes and props were auctioned for a total of £17,257 yesterday at Sotheby's, London. Bidding was often fierce among the 250 people at the two-hour sale the first of its kind held by the BBC for 13 years.
Some lots fetched more than three times their estimated price when 5,500 items came under the hammer. Kenny Everett's "falsies" in a shocking pink drag costume fetched £200 and Rolf Harris's 12-armed jacket went for £220 - both ten times higher than expected.
The Goodies' three-man bicycle went for £750. The estimate was between £300 and £400. Three Dr Who monster costumes made three times their estimate.
