[edit]

FORMER Doctor Who actor Peter Davison swapped the Tardis for a caravan yesterday when he toured The Mail on Sunday's Caravan, Camping and Holiday Show.

Peter and his wife, actress Sandra Dickinson, tried out new models from the basic tourers to luxury homes on wheels when the show opened at Earls Court, London.

Freedom

'They certainly beat the Tardis for comfort,' said Peter, who has become a keen caravan fan in recent years and stars with Sandra in a Caravan Club video, Behind You All The Way aimed at promoting caravan holidays.

'They are cheap and give you the freedom to go where the fancy takes you,' said Peter yesterday.

Echoing the boom in caravans — oversees sales alone are up 32 per cent this year with an export surplus of £2 million — this year's show is the biggest ever with more than 100 exhibition stands.

It takes a Mediterranean beach scene as its central feature and on the forecourt is the ABI caravan Jack Pennington used for his record-setting three week journey of 6,276 miles to the Sahara and back.

There are more new motor caravans being launched at the show than ever before.

Competitions, open to all visitors, included one by The Mail on Sunday, with a first prize of an £8,000 ABI Award Superstar caravan.

Thousands of visitors are expected to visit the show which runs until November 16. Admission is £3.20 for adults and £1.60 for children and pensioners.

It is open from 10.00 a.m.-8.00 p.m. every day except the final day when it will open from 10.00 a.m.-6.00 p.m.
