[edit]

SOME TV station around here is missing a sure ratings winner by not adding "Doctor Who" to its schedule.

While in Chicago recently attending a comicon, I was swept into an adjunct convention of Doctor Who admirers and this was no small thing.

Shades of "Star Trek" cons, it drew some 10,000 people to look over Doctor Who memorabilia, buy $14 T-shirts, preview new episodes and meet some of the stars and production people. Many even dressed as Doctor Who, or some of the other characters.

Doctor Who is a British-made TV serial now in its 19th year. It once aired in this area via Iowa public television and I can attest to the fact that it is suitably terrible to attract a gigantic following. It features outrageous costumes, Japanese-style "rubber monsters," lots of electricity crackling as its main special effect, cardboard sets and plenty of over-acting. When one actor leaves the lead role, Doctor Who changes appearance through a "reincarnation."

It has played in Chicago for years, provided by Time-Life Television, and it is time it returned here. Ratings are guaranteed.

It is "camp" long after the fad of "camp" has been over. But "camp" is still fun; what other TV serial can offer that? What other TV serial is there?
