Simon Pegg has revealed that he has been cast as a villain called The Editor in the new series of Dr Who.

He makes a cameo appearance in episode seven of the sci-fi show, as controller of the 500th floor of a mysterious building from which time travellers do not return.

The Spaced actor is one of several stars making guest appearances in the BBC1 drama, featuring Christopher Eccleston as the Time Lord and Billie Piper as his assistant.

Pegg, 35, told Nuts magazine he had been cast as The Editor.

He said: "I'm in one episode of the new Doctor Who. I think it's going to be spectacular. It's a real honour to be in it. To be a Doctor Who villain was a bit of a dream come true, so I was very happy to do that."

Former Coronation Street star Bruno Langley, One Foot in the Grave star Richard Wilson and Green Wing actress Tamsin Greig are also set to appear in forthcoming episodes.

This Saturday's episode, which followed the news that Eccleston will not be starring in a second series, once again beat ITV rival Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.

But it lost about a quarter of the 10 million viewers who watched on its first night.
