[edit]

DR WHO is to have a new companion for his travels through time a tough, leggy, brunette who will "separate the women from the girls" in the popular BBC television series.

She is called Leela, a cave-girl character from a distant planet, played by former Royal Shakespeare Company actess Louise Jameson (pictured left), and she will be a complete departure from the usual younger ladies who endure Dr Who's adventures.

For Louise, 25, will play an Avengers-style heroine handy with a crossbow and not averse to killing enemies with poison thorns.

She will join Dr Who in the Tardis later in the present series. Viewers will see her first appearance in the programme on January 1.

Louise replaces Elisbeth Sladen, Dr Who's companion for the past two and a half years, who left the series last Saturday.

Until she arrives, the Doctor will be without a regular travelling girl friend.

Spelling correction: Elisabeth Sladen
