[edit]

Dr. Who's top dog, K-9, is to be put down - because he is too bright.

The mechanical hound with built-in computer and the blast gun will disappear from the TV screen in the New Year along with the Time Lord's present companion, Romana.

Producer of the series, John Nathan-Turner, said: "K-9 has been very popular over the last three years but it is time we called it a day - he makes it too easy for the Doctor to get out of situations.

Earlier this year, K-9 went on sick leave after going walkiess along Brighton beach and falling into the sea.
