THE long-awaited return of a Dalek to Dr Who on Saturday was met with mixed emotions by actor Roy Skelton. Roy, 73, who provided the exterminators' voices for more than 20 years from the early
Sixties, was not asked to reprise the role for the new episode, which saw the Timelord's arch-enemy for the first time in 17 years.
However, Roy has praised the latest portrayal, by actor Nicholas Briggs, which revealed a previously unknown sensitive side to the Dalek psyche, with the metal assassin sparing the life of the Doctor's assistant Rose, played by Billie Piper, left. "It was super," says Brighton-based Roy, who also provided the voices of puppets Zippy and George in the children's show Rainbow.
"The Dalek voice was very good —he could put emotion into it whereas my dalek just had to obey orders —and I liked the storyline. I just wish I'd been doing it!"
