IF an American negotiating technique comes to Britain, I anticipate those giants of the Trade Union Establishment—Len Murray, general secretary of the TUC, Hugh Scanlon of the AEU, and Jack Jones of the T G W U—becoming redundant.

The United Steelworkers of America now take a large, if portable, computer terminal to the negotiating table with them so that they can instantly analyse offers from the bosses.

Doubtless the day is nigh when Dr. Who's old adversaries, the Daleks, will trundle into boardrooms to present their carefully programmed demands with quavering electronic shrieks of "Negotiate Negotiate !"

There are some union leaders who will undoubtedly keep their Jobs. The loquacious Clive Jenkins of ASTMS already sounds like an over-programmed Welsh preacher, while the Orwellian nightmare Is for me given credence by Arthur Scargill, the Yorkshire miners' leader. who always sounds like a North Country Daiek specially primed for Cant.
