DOCTOR Who's arch enemies the Daleks are set to terrorise parents as well as Timelords later this year.

The BBC has signed a deal to turn the pepperpot-shaped aliens and other Doctor Who characters into remote-controlled toys.

A new series of the science fiction adventure begins next month after a 20-year gap and the BBC hopes that spin-off toys will dominate the Christmas shop shelves.

The BBC has signed a multimillion pound contract with toy manufacturers Character Options to make motorised Daleks selling for around £30.

This is the company behind last year's best-selling high-tech toy, the Robosapien.

The toy Daleks, which have infrared sensors used to trigger a shout of "Exterminate" or "Intruder Alert" if someone crosses their line of sight, are expected to be the biggest sellers in the Doctor Who range.

Other toys will include a Tardis that makes the famous creaky teleporting sound, a video game and figurines of new Doctor Who stars Christopher Ecclestone and Billie Piper.

"We wanted a partner which had an innovative record with technological and robotic toys," said Richard Hollis of BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC.

The BBC originally set up its licensing division, which exploits the commercial potential of BBC brands and rechannels the profits back into programme-making, in 1964 because of the popularity of the original Daleks.
