Peter Davison, the current doctor, is resigning from the role after his third season, in December.

Peter Davison, currently playing the Doctor on Doctor Who, will leave the role at the end of his third season. That news was reported by Larry Charet, one of the organizers of the Chicago Doctor Who convention held Aug. 13-14.

Stars of the show and the show's producer attended the convention. Charet told MCW, "Davison said he's currently taping the third story of the third season and he'll be leaving after Christmas."

Doctor Who's producer, John Nathan-Turner, told the convention's 4,500 attendees that a replacement hasn't been chosen yet.

The British SF serial is the longest-running prime-time TV drama in the world. Davison follows William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, and Tom Baker as the other-worldly Doctor on TV. (Peter Cushing played a slightly different version in two British film adaptations.)
