Actress who played Victoria in Doctor Who in the late 1960s
Deborah Watling, who has died aged 69, was best known for playing Victoria alongside Patrick Troughton in Doctor Who. Her propensity to greet danger with a piercing scream earned Watling the nickname Leatherlungs from her fellow actors. She departed the series in the terrifying story Fury from the Deep, in which malevolent seaweed infected British gas rigs, but not before one last in-joke. The seaweed is repelled by high-pitched noises, so her scream becomes key to defeating it. After Doctor Who, she opened a boutique called the Pink Clock. Some sign alteration by vandals gave her an anecdote for life. The Guardian
