[edit]

OUR LITTLE son, who is four years old, has developed a quite unreasonable fear of going upstairs at night. I can't think why this should be, for he has been perfectly normal all through, so far.

I wonder whether by any chance it could be due to watching Dr. Who on television, and whether he expects to meet a Dalek in his bedroom one night. Anyway, because of this theory I have tried to wean him off Dr. Who, but completely without success. He admits the programme makes him scared, but insists it is the best programme on television.

What do you think I ought to do?

YOU MAY be right about suspecting Dr. Who, but even if you are, I doubt whether it would be wise to stop your son watching, since he seems to enjoy the programme so much. I feel nature is to be relied upon here as an adequate guide, so that if the Daleks were really upsetting him badly he would automatically lose his enthusiasm.

Children of your son's age often get what seem to parents to be inexplicable fears. In fact there is some reason - such as something which has been said to the child, possibly by friend when out of hearing of the parents - which has impressed itself vividly on the listener's mind.

My advice is to humour your son sympathetically and not to get worried about it, for the fear will almost certainly disappear.
