UNIVERSAL APPEAL

First conceived at the BBC in 1962 to fill a time slot between Grandstand (adult sport) and Juke Box Jury (teen pop). Science fiction with an educational mission was the objective. First broadcast in 1963, 50 years of convoluted, inspired craziness was to follow

TIGHT FIT

First appearing in 1963, the Daleks have featured in 22 of the Doctor's adventures. The early versions were controlled from inside by short operators who had to manipulate eyestalks, domes and arms, as well as flashing the lights in sync with the actor's voice shouting EXTERMINATE!

THF BLACK HOLE

The series disappeared in 1989 and did not return until 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the 9th doctor. Paul McGann had played the 8th doctor in the 1996 TV movie

BREAKING RECORDS

More than 800 episodes so far. It's the "longest running" and "world most successful" science fiction series. It has won more than 120 industry awards including "greatest monsters in the galaxy" for the 1963-vintage Daleks. Viewing figures have always been high and peaked in 1979 with more than 16 million tuning in to City Of Death

DR WHAT?

A Time Lord with a secret name, originally from the planet Gallifrey, most of his family and race were wiped out in wars with the Daleks

HE'S AN ALIEN

Time Lords appear human but have some differences. Two hearts and a body temperature of 15C. They are telepathic clairvoyants with the ability to go without air and to resist large doses of radiation

MANY HAPPY RETURNS

The Doctor is hundreds of Earth years old and has the ability to regenerate. His mastery over space and time allows multiple versions of himself to appear together

WELL CONNECTED

During ins travels, usually with an Earth-born companion, The Doctor has met many famous historical figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein and Queen Elizabeth I

MOVING AND SHAKING

The TARDIS transports the Doctor and companions on their adventures through time and space. Inside it's very spacious with an array of magical technology. Outside, because of a broken "chamelion circuit" it always looks just like a police box

DEADLY ENEMIES

More than 400 monsters and villains have been fought throughout the series, including the Daleks, Cybermen, Silurians, Sontarans, Zygons, Weeping Angels, Ood and The Master

FASHION STATEMENTS

Each regeneration comes with sartorial eccentricities. From bowties, fairisle knitwear and extra-long scarves to formal waistcoats, dapper blazers and grungy leather

ESSENTIAL ACCESSORIES

Favourite gadgets include K9 the robotic dog, the sonic screwdriver which can unlock almost anything and psychic paper for perfect counterfeit images
