For fans of the iconic Doctor Who franchise, the shift between leading protagonists can be a tormenting, tortuous and somewhat unnerving experience.

The rebooted series leads Christopher Eccelston (2005), David Tennant (2005-2010) and Matt Smith (2010-2013) all brought their own intense and sometimes whimsical twists to the Gallifreyan Time Lord and Peter Capaldi's glorious rebirth from the TARDIS in the season premiere episode Deep Breath is nothing short of spectacular.

The Scottish Capaldi brings the same intensity and cutting comedic delivery to the Doctor as he brought to his potty-mouthed portrayal of government spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker in the political BBC sitcom The Thick of It.

Head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat continues to add creepy, dark and skin-crawling enemies of the universe and mankind to the Doctor Who omnibus and in 80 minutes pushed memories of Smith, Tennant and Eccelston aside and allowed fans to peak into the darker side of the 2000-year-old time traveller.

This is going to be one hell of a season for fans.

Special features include a prequel scene and behind-the-scenes featurettes, Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor announcement of Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor and an episode of a TIME documentary that focuses on time travel and features Tennant, Karen Kilian and Neil Gaiman.
