Doctor Who Star Is Leaving the Series

Somewhere, the Daleks are waving their telescopic appendages in celebration that another Doctor has been exterminated. But there is no joy among fans of "Doctor Who," the long-running British science-fiction adventure series, whose lead actor, Matt Smith, will depart at the end of the year, the BBC said.
According to the lore of "Doctor Who" (which is shown in the United States on BBC America), Mr. Smith is the 11th incarnation of the mysterious traveler of time and space known only as the Doctor, and the third actor to portray the character since the series was revived in 2005. He has played the role since 2010, when he succeeded David Tennant, and will appear together with Mr. Tennant in a 50th anniversary "Doctor Who" special in November prior to his final appearance in a Christmas special in December.
Mr. Smith said in a statement that "Doctor Who" has been "the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show." He added: "The fans of 'Doctor Who' around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I've never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable."
Steven Moffat, the lead writer and executive producer of "Doctor Who," said in a statement, "Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently."
No actor (or actress) was immediately announced to play the next regeneration of the Doctor, so, as Mr. Smith suggested, let the speculation commence.
