[edit]

On November 23, 1963, the day after the assassination of President John F Kennedy, the BBC broadcast the first episode of a new teatime science fiction drama starring William Hartnell as a mysterious time traveller. Now, 871 episodes and 14 official lead actors later, Doctor Who celebrates its 60th anniversary with three hour-long specials starring a returning David Tennant and Catherine Tate. Episode one, The Star Beast, is the first to be made as part of a new deal between the BBC and Disney, which will bring bigger budgets to a show that was once famous for its cheap effects. This first hour sets up subsequent weekly specials (Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle) written by Russell T Davies, the returning showrunner who brought the show back to television screens in 2005, 16 years after it was axed in 1989. Expect familiar faces, new friends and foes and plenty of the unexpected as the programme prepares to welcome the 15th Doctor — Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa — full time from Christmas for a new streaming era outside the UK across the globe on Disney+.
