[edit]

The BBC's new Doctor Who computer game The Doctor and the Dalek will teach local children more about coding at D5, the London summit of leading digital governments. International D5 delegates will also share experiences and discuss the best way to teach code in primary schools.

The Doctor and the Dalek game sees the current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, take on dangerous quests against his enemies. The game is available to play on the CBBC website.

The UK is hosting the first summit of a new global network called D5 on 9 to 10 December 2014. This is a group of some of the most digitally advanced governments in the world.

This year, England became the first country in the world to mandate teaching coding to children at primary and secondary schools. The new computing curriculum emphasises computer science, including how computers work and the basics of programming. It encourages pupils to design computer programs to address real world problems. It is compulsory in all maintained schools from ages 5 to 16. Yet some other countries have been ahead of England. In Estonia, for example, schools have been teaching children to code in primary schools since the 1990s. Israel undertook a review of computing at school in the 1990s and now has what the British Government summit briefing called "the most rigorous computer science high school programme in the world".
