The Bay area "Doctor Who" fan club is planning a big protest against WEDU, Channel 3, over reports that the station may drop the long-running British science-fiction series.
"Doctor Who" has been in reruns on Channel 3 for six years, and a new batch of episodes starring Colin Baker are scheduled to begin next week.
The series, a fixture on the BBC for more than 25 years, has a small but loyal following in Florida.
The series is about an intellectual alien who travels through time and space fighting weird creatures.
Susan Mills, a spokesman for the Bay area fan club, said they had been told by WEDU officials that after November the good doctor would disappear. She said the group, which has helped WEDU raise money during pledge drives, now plans to picket the station.
However, WEDU program director Jim Stasko says the fans may be acting in haste. He said he is still in negotiations with the distributor of the series for more reruns at a lower price. He said the asking price is too high. Ratings for the series have declined in recent years, but Mills claims there are thousands in the Bay area who dearly love the show. Stay tuned.
