[edit]

Fans of Doctor Who might not be surprised to see an airborne police box —but the Doctor is usually inside it, not hanging underneath (Kat Lay writes).

Matt Smith, the current Doctor, and Jenna-Louise Coleman, who plays his new companion, Clara, were filming scenes for the 50th anniversary episode of the science-fiction show in Trafalgar Square yesterday.

Smith, 30, was filmed clinging on to the Tardis as crane lifted it off the ground, while Coleman, 26, stood inside—but both were replaced by stunt doubles before the blue box ascended too high. The episode is rumoured to be a feature-length, 3-D special. David Tennant, Smith's predecessor, will feature, but Christopher Eccleston, who played the Doctor when the new-look series was launched in 2005, has chosen not to appear.
