The real McCoy will sign autographs at Bates school

Doctor Who's headed for town.

Sylvester McCoy, the seventh actor to headline the wacky sci-fi series from Britain, will dispense autographs Sunday when the Doctor Who exhibit rolls into Tacoma.

Public station KTPS (Channel 28) will host the Doctor Who Celebration & Tour '87-'88 from noon until 8 p.m. at Bates Vocational School's south campus, South 78th and Sprague.

Doctor Whovians will further get the chance to see a real Tardis (a time-travel vehicle), a mockup of the ship's control panel, and Bessie, the banana-colored 1953 Ford that belonged to Doctor No. 3 (played by Jon Pertwee).

KTPS says there's also a chance Pertwee will take part in the festivities. That Doctor makes an appearance Saturday at the touring exhibit in Bellingham.

Tickets for "the world's only experience theater on wheels" (as KTPS calls it) are $7.50 for adults and $6 for KTPS members. Kids 5 and younger get in free.

To whet your appetite, Channel 28 will air a Doctor Who special from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Saturday. The Five Doctors will eulogize Doctor Who, which after 24 consecutive years is the longest-running science fiction show in television history.
