DR. WHO's latest time-travelling companion beamed into London today for a brief encounter with the press.
The intrepid TV Doctor is to lose the latest in a long line of girl assistants and collected a 15-year-old boy instead.
Romana, played by actress Lalla Ward, will disappear from the popular BBC series this autumn.
She is to be replaced by a mischievous alien called Adric, who is likely to prove more than a handful for the resourceful doctor.
Adric will be played by unknown 18-year-old Matthew Waterhouse. who comes from Hawyards Heath in Sussex. Today he took time off from filming to speak about his metroric rise to fame.
"Of course I'm very excited about this role," said Matthew, posing for photographers in his extra-terrestrial tunic.
"Dr. Who is a super programme to be involved with and of course I have been very lucky."
Matthew was reluctant to give away too much about the dangers and adventures he and the doctor would encounter this autumn. "But there are green scaly lizards and flying bat-like monsters," he said.
Matthew, who finished his A-levels a year ago, is the 21st Dr. Who companion, and the first male assistant for the current doctor, played by Tom Baker.
His diminutive size and cheeky schoolboy appearance made him ideal for the role of Adric.
"I will be working with Lalla for a time before she leaves the series. I think it is good to have both a boy and girl companion for the doctor, because it gets back to the family atmosphere and I believe it is very popular."
Matthew will appear twenty of the 28 episodes planned for the new series.
