THERE ARE two Dr. Who exhibitions this month, one at Longleat and the other at Blackpool, and they come just a year after the death of the man who created the Dr. Who role, William Hartnell.
He is seen here with Patrick Troughton, who took over the part from him, and Jon Pertwee, who in turn became Dr. Who in 1970. The three appeared in a 1972 Dr. Who series, in which the Doctor's previous selves helped him in a battle against a monster called the Gell.
When William Hartnell accepted the part, at the age of 55 years, he said he was so pleased to be offered the role: "Because to me, kids are the greatest audience and the greatest critics in the world.
He had previously been well-known in the theatre and in films as a tough guy - notably the sergeant in "The Way Ahead," and the tyrannical petty officer in "Seagulls Over Sorronto.
He was a cousin of Norman Hartnell, the Queen's dressmaker.
