Comics enthusiasts gather for mall show
If you don't know who Dr. Who is or think HIVE is something bees live in or confuse Dr. and Mr. Spock, then your hero probably wasn't there Saturday.
Comic book maniacs and superhero look-alikes gathered at the Cross County Mall in suburban West Palm Beach to buy, sell and talk about the arcane world of comics.
"Usually, he stops Stalags, destroys Ciberman and stops The Master," Martin Pierro, 12, said of his favorite peace-loving comic character (and long-running British television show), Dr. Who.
Dr. Who doesn't fight, you understand; violence is anathema to him.
Basically, Pierro said, "He goes around saving the universe."
Pierro has collected some 13,000 comics since he took up the hobby a year ago. He writes and publishes his own comic fan magazine called Cosmic Times. And Saturday he was dressed up as Dr. Who — wearing the trademark 17-foot multicolored scarf, long brown jacket, floppy brown hat and brown pants.
Other notables at the Comic Book and Collectables Expo included Mr. Spock, the Vulcan first officer of Star Trek, also known as Selim Salguero, a self-professed 27-year-old child from Palm Beach Gardens.
Salguero owns copies of the scripts from the 79 Star Trek television episodes and the three Star Trek films. He has genuine Star Trek costumes, including one of the 100 Mr. Spock masks in existence, as well as phasers, communicators, tri-coders and other paraphernalia.
"Some people are into drinking, smoking, getting into trouble," said Salguero, a magician who suffers from muscular dystrophy and who appears annually on the Jerry Lewis telethon.
He added: "Nasha shasu no karoga."
Translated: "Live long and prosper" in Vulcan.
In addition to the look-alikes, eight South Florida comic book sellers peddled more than 20,000 comics.
HIVE, by the way, stands for Headquarters for International Vengeance and Espionage, of the Teen Titans comic book series.
