LENOX — The Dr. Who Experience Theatre, a unique mobile entertainment center located in a 48-foot mobile van will arrive in Lenox today for a three-day visit.
The theatre, and accompanying vintage convertible, Bessie, will open at The Center at Lenox Shopping Mall at noon today. It will be open until 9 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday before moving to Holyoke.
The theatre is the only "experience theatre on wheels," according to a spokesman at Channel 57, the Public Broadcasting Station in Springfield. The van is travelling across the United States during a two-year tour.
The mobile exhibition was built by the British Boadcasting Corp. in support of its television phenomenon "Doctor Who," which is seen on 180 PBS stations throughout the United States, including WGBY, Channel 57 in Springfield.
The 23-year-old program is the longest running science fiction show in television history and is the most successful British TV export ever, being seen by over 110 million viewers in approximately 80 countries.
The animated roadshow features all the show's famous monsters and villains housed in a 48-foot trailer. Set behind reinforced mirrored glass, the figures are brought to life through various lighting and sound special effects along with animation. The project was the brainchild of Englishman Brian Sloman who is travelling with the exhibition on its 180-city tour.
The exhibit includes Bessie, a bright yellow vintage car built on a 1953 Ford Popular chassis for actor Jon Pertwee, who played the third Doctor. The car still runs, despite her role in many adventures on the show.
The tour started May 9 in Washington D.C. with opening ceremonies led by the shows current and youngest doctor, English actor Peter Davision.
