[edit]

Dr. Who was in a tight corner at Heigham Park, Norwich, on Saturday. But, for once it was not the Daleks - never far away - who put him there.

They were quickly scared into hiding by the same crowd of youngsters that put the Doctor under pressure.

He was there, in the shape of Jon Pertwee, to open the Trinity United Reform fete, which attracted about 3000 people during the afternoon and raised over £750 the work of the Norwich Presbyterian Church.

When the children's television hero entered the main arena to open the fete he had to have a bodyguard as the crowd closed in.

The opening over, he had another tough assignment to move on to - signing autographs for some 90 minutes.

The Daleks, too, needed help they were attacked an almost exterminated by youngsters with an overwhelming desire to take them apart and see what made them tick.

Eventually the Doctor's rivals found refuge in the tea tent where fete organizers cover them with tarpaulins.

Other attractions at the event were a dog obedience display, a Tai Kwendoo demonstration, a Scout knock-out contest and sideshows including one called "Duck the wench" where bikini girls were quite a splash.

One of the organizers, Mr. Ian Brown, praised the part of Jon Pertwee in making the fete such a success: "He was fantastic - kindness itself, just as one hoped he would be."
