ALTUS - Lovers of the Dr. Who TV series have established a local chapter for this year's 50th anniversary celebration of the show.
The Altus Dr. Who Chapter has been meeting monthly since the start of 2013 and is now getting on its feet. Peggy Sue Clay, chapter leader, said the chapter has received good response locally.
"About half of those know the show and want to bring excitement to the program," she said. "But we're starting from ground zero."
The Dr. Who series is a British science fiction program that aired on the BBC from 1963-89 and then was relaunched in 2005. It has also aired in the U.S. on PBS stations. The Altus chapter is one of many local chapters for the series in the United States and around the world, and the goal is to make a video celebrating the 50th anniversary.
"This is the first time fans have ever gathered together to create an independent film of a TV show, movie or play here in southwestern Oklahoma," Clay said. "This is exciting! Imagine being part of something which no one else has attempted before. Yes, there will be roadblocks and stumbling blocks along the way. But just imagine for one moment what kind of opportunities this door may open. It more than likely will go viral ... could also be mentioned on major networks.
"Our chapter is already getting a lot of press publications just because what we are about to achieve not only means something to us, but others are starting to notice too. This is some of the reasons I enjoy being part of this experience."
In addition to members who dress up as their favorite Dr. Who characters, the chapter is also looking for members to serve in "behind-the-scenes" - but still important - tasks such as treasurer and fundraising director, along with anyone who can submit ideas for fundraising efforts and other activities.
"We are representing the film as a film company and want to look professional to the public," Clay said. "And we're looking to promote our chapter through various avenues."
Later on, the chapter plans to sponsor a Dr. Who showing at a local theater if arrangements can be made.
Clay said the chapter's portion of the Dr. Who script is not yet known. That will depend upon local support in meeting needs such as the portrayal of various Dr. Who characters and more mundane tasks.
"We are growing every day and getting new chapters across the nation," she said. "But we're just a fan film club and not budgeted like George Lucas or the BBC."
The Dr. Who Chapter meets one Saturday each month at the Clay Cafe, 117 N. Jackson, which has wireless Internet to enable Skype to broadcast the meeting for fans who cannot attend in person. The chapter also has its own Facebook page and website and has received word of mouth publicity in the community.
Craig Deaver, a former radio technician, joined the Altus chapter to design sets and fulfill other technical needs.
"It sounds like a bucket of fun and will only get better," he said.
One of the other members joined the chapter because of his own interest in a particular Dr. Who character.
"I'm a big Dr. Who fan. I remember as a kid staying up Friday and Saturday night at 10 p.m. on PBS," said George Taylor. "Tom Baker was my favorite doctor, along with his assistant Sarah Jane Smith."'
