Dennis and the Doctor face off once again, but there's a bargain-bin inevitability
It's that time of year when the market share of annuals goes through the proverbial roof. There's usually a popularity contest between perennial heavyweight, The Beano, and the 21st-century Doctor Who.
Doctor Who trounced Dennis' menace comprehensively last year, finishing almost 50,000 units ahead in total, and history is on track to repeat itself this year with the 2008 Doctor Who Annual (Penguin) already 10,000 units up on The Beano Annual (D C Thomson) after little more than two months of sales.
Below is a graph showing the sales of last year's annuals, which demonstrates just how quickly interest drops post-Christmas.
The trend is for retailers to start discounting prices from early November, which explains the erratic sales spikes--sales fall in the week when the a.s.p. rises and vice versa, although W H Smith has kicked off early this year with a £4.99 offer on all annuals.
They make great stocking-fillers, but parents would be well advised to pretend that Father Christmas visits extra-special children for a second time in January. The 2007 Beano Annual sold for £2.02 on average in January this year, down 56% on the £4.60 a.s.p, during the four weeks before Christmas.
