BBC boss Michael Grade has come under fire for announcing that he intends to temporarily ditch Dr Who on grounds of cost.
Be that as it may, Mr Grade would have received my undying support had he stated that he was giving the popular, long-running, science-fantasy series the elbow because he thought that the writers had all gone barmy.
I think that they have. I have never seen such a bizarre and unattractive collection of stories as those presented to us in the present series.
Consider the three-part story - by Dr Who veteran Mr Robert Holmes - which finished last Saturday! It contained an important character called Shockeye (played by John Stratton) who had come to Earth with no other thought in mind than to cut up, cook, and eat a human being.
He came close to achieving his ambition.
Truth
Was that funny? Did it contain some significant truth which I have missed? Or are we simply faced with a team whose continued success has gone to their heads to such an extent that they feel free to indulge themselves to their hearts content?
At the moment, I am unlikely to miss Dr Who.
